1969 Camouflage VW Beetle Welcome to All Things VW or as we are calling ourselves now.. All Things VeeDub. I have here a little project that I put together from a ratty little 1969 VW Beetle that I picked up the spring of 2013. Over all , the body on this Bug is solid, just has some faded paint and needs some new door panels. I stripped out the door panels, which will be replaced with custom aluminum door panels in a few months. I sanded down the car, filled in some cracks, cut the fender 2" all the way round for extra tire clearance, and fit big over sized tires squeezed onto some nice bright white wagon wheels to contrast the custom camo paint job that I gave to my bug.
I can not go anywhere without people coming up to me and commenting on the car. If I am stopped somewhere eating fast food or donuts in the car I spend the entire time talking to people about the car. It is amazing to see so many people so energized by my project.
IHere she is, from when I picked her up and towed her home, down to her present build state. I will comment along the journey of making this humdrum VW Beetle into my unique Camouflage Street Baja Bug.
After a day and a half of sanding I am getting ready to put some primer on the 69 VW Beetle, as seen below I simply loosened the fenders enough to pull the fender beeding out. I did not plan on painting under the fenders, that was covered by undercoating..
A little rattle can grey primer is going to serve as my base color, lightest color first. It also helps to smooth out fine scratches. I did have to sand the primer before painting. This was always meant to be a rat rod project of sorts... never meaning to get a perfect showroom finish on any part of this car. Coming along nicely. Even my cat had to be in on the action. As you can see here, I still have the stock pea shooters installed, they came off once the build was done. I left the small dent in the left rear fender. I could have replaced it but I think it ads character to the car. Once the VW is fully camouflaged you can't see it.
